5 Kids Room Furniture Ideas
Designing a kids’ room is about more than just choosing furniture and decor, it’s about creating a space where little ones feel at home, inspired, and free to grow. Join us as we explore the colorful and creative kids’ room of Franziska Bodner!
We asked Franziska to come up with five furniture builds and share some thoughts on styling, her sources of inspiration, and how she incorporates the various functionalities of MODU into this space.

What was your vision when designing the kids´room?
When we moved into our apartment two years ago, I didn’t really have a set vision for the kids’ room. I actually love it when a room comes together little by little—and honestly, it’s still always changing, just like the kids as they grow.
What’s most important to us is keeping things natural and creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere. The kids should feel at home in their room, see themselves reflected in it, and just enjoy spending time there.
Where do you draw inspiration for kids´room decor?
I get a lot of inspiration from Instagram—it’s such a great place to discover beautiful accounts and see how other people style their homes. That’s exactly what I want my account to feel like too: a space where people can find ideas and inspiration.
But honestly, a lot of ideas just pop into my head out of nowhere! I often spot color combinations in nature that I fall in love with and then try to recreate at home. Movies are another big source of inspiration for me—I’m a total Wes Anderson fan! I love noticing little details in his films.
How do you balance functionality and aesthetics when decorating a kids´space?
Since we have a small home with just 76m² for the four of us, we pretty much live in every room. For example, in the bedroom, we’ll work at the desk or watch a movie together. In the living kitchen, the dining table isn’t just for eating—it’s where we paint, do crafts, and work on homework too. But the kids’ room is really their space. It’s the biggest room, so there’s plenty of room for building forts, letting imaginations run wild, and then falling into their cozy beds at the end of the day.
How do you incorporate the various functionalities of MODU into the kids´room?
Since we have quite a few tall cabinets in the kids' room, we love building steps with MODU to help them reach things more easily. Right now, my favorite creation is a little shelf made from the new balance set. It’s sitting under the small coat rack in the hallway outside the kids’ room and works perfectly as a shoe rack and storage, plus it helps the kids with getting dressed on their own. And of course, the all-time favorite for our youngest is the table and chairs—he’s always sitting there drawing or "inviting" us to join him for a little meal.
What do you love most about this space?
I think it’s all the personal little touches on the walls, like the kids' crafts, postcards, souvenirs from our trips, or tiny dried flower bouquets they’ve picked and kept in little vases. These things really capture the personalities of our two boys and you can see a bit of their character in every corner of the room.
